A common feature of the landscape in this area of the Eastern Cape are the termite mounds. Varying in size, height and colour depending on the soil in the area in which they have been constructed. We certainly have our fair share of termite mounds here at Pomeroy. You can’t help but admire the huge amount of work
that goes into the building of these structures. They play an important role in the eco-structure of the reserve.

The mound consists of an extensive system of tunnels. The tunnels provide the ventilation system for the subterranean nest. The mounds are well maintained with the patched areas clearly visible until the soil dries and blends in again with the rest of the mound. Nothing seems to deter these industrious creatures. Anything that gets in their way just gets built over and included in the edifice. When out looking for game even an experienced guide can occasionally mistake a mound for a species they are looking for. They also make exceedingly good lookout posts, in particular for the baboons and vervet monkeys and of course many species of bird.
