Several species of Cycad grow on Pomeroy Reserve. We have a lot of plants of the variety Encephalartos altensteinii. One particular plant, which would appear to be several hundred years old judging by its size and girth of trunk is located right next to the main house. Over the last few weeks it has produced eight seed cones. Each over thirty centimetres in length, the cones are bright orange in colour. The recent warm days has encouraged the cones to open up releasing their seeds. Many birds have been enjoying the natural feast in particular the sunbirds. It was also delightful to see a pair of Dark backed weavers gorging themselves. The speed at which they are managing to strip the seeds from the cones is quite remarkable!
